Perry's initial efforts at fame in the mainstream were unsuccessful, with two separate record labels signing and then dropping her before the release of any music. Capitol Records, however, launched Perry's Ur So Gay album in 2007 which was received with only modest approval for the title track. Perry became a bigger star a few months later, with the single I Kissed a Girl an assertive ode to sexual desire backed by a sharp electro-pop beat. I Kissed a Girls was an immediate hit, however it quickly sparked controversies. Many critics argued that the track encouraged sexual relationships between gay and straight men, and others felt that the story that depicted in it was more appealing to fantasies of males. I Kissed a Girl, the combination of excitement with a refined melody helped I Kissed a Girl to become a hit number one in a variety of countries, and to drive sales for her album One of the Boys. The sharp, bouncy second single was also popular. The album Perry composed in large part was sold to over 3 million people.
